Gees…..what more can you say here also?

Not meaning to pick on our kiwi friends again …. they sent this to me! ……… in follow-up to the last post:

War driver’ sparks Otago DHB network security review

Once again, no further commentary required.

But, the question needs to be asked AGAIN. (Aside: How often do I cover this?). How can CIOs and senior IT managers justify having no clue about basic security principles? (By CIO, not just the acting dude from the article but CIOs in general). The usual excuses of being too busy, they employ “specialists”, it’s not their responsibility etc etc etc etc …… these things just do not cut it! It’s akin to a CEO not bothering to understand his company’s financial position because he has hired accountants!

CIO with no direct interest in, or management of IT Security (take out lip service) = Dumb CIO - danger to the company they work for!

And you wonder why so many security dudes are angry young men. :-)

  1. Re: War driving. I’m afraid I just don’t get it. Why would anyone want to drive around in their spare time, waving a directional anntenna out of a car, secretly mapping wireless vulnerabilities ? I’m buggered if I know. I actually know of a bloke who ‘war drives’ around with his girlfriend on weekends. She faithfully drives him and his directional parabolic antenna around the place, mapping the vulnerabilities & later publishing them on a web page like some sort of trophy. Now I don’t know about you, but I can think of better things to do with my partner, and although a antenna (with batteries) might add some excitement, it certainly wouldn’t be used in the same way this guy intended. ;- ) Seriously though, if their motivation is to be a white-hat vigilante, why don’t they simply drive around the streets, telling people about their car they’ve left unlocked, or their house window accidentally they’ve left open ? I suspect it’s because it’s not quite as ‘exciting’ (and I use that term very lightly !). My message to ‘war drivers’ ? Get a life, dudes.

  2. Chappo,

One of my guys, on a recommendation from another one of my guys, decided that the best approach to doing such an exercise would be to get into a helicopter.

They’re still keen on doing this! If you could help, being the chopper pilot you are, that would be great.

  3. Draz,
I would be happy to assist but I don’t have my license as yet (I still have 2 exams & 80hrs flying left). I do however have some good friends in the chopper business who would be more than happy to accomodate war drivers. If they’re happy with a rate of around $400 per hour, this can be accomplished !
PS. I wonder if now they’d be classed as war drivers or war flyers ? This might entail a whole new class of nerd for wikipedia !! The concept would certainly make for an interesting lecture at AusCert or Ruxcon.
