Gilchrist retires - off topic…sad about it…who wins….Aus vs. Windies
For you non UK or sub-continent readers, sorry, I thought I would throw this out there. 2 dynastys that will always be compared…..I have thrown together what I think are the best two teams from their eras.
Keen on your thoughts. (Gees….Hussey with an 80 average can’t make the team!) What do you think on a 6 test series across 3 in Oz and 3 in the Windies….
Aus Windies
M.Hayden G. Greendidge
M.Taylor D. Haynes
G. Chappell V. Richards
A. Border B. Lara
R. Ponting C.Lloyd
S. Waugh R. Richardson
A. Glichrist D. Murray
S. Warne M. Marshall
D. Lillee M. Holding
J. Thompson A. Roberts
G. McGrath C. Ambrose
I can’t go past a drawn result no matter how much I would like the Aussies to win it! But saying that, I can’t see the Aussies being beaten either! Lay it down guys!

1-1 in the Windies
2-1 in Aus to the Aussies
January 28th, 2008 at 12:38 am
I think 2-1 to Aus. 3 Draws. To many good batsman and while the West Indies were good, on tracks that did not suit the bowlers, that Aussie batting would go nuts! Add Thomo in top form and you have bowlers that would match the Windies. The Warne factor would be the difference.
January 28th, 2008 at 12:45 am
Warne Factor: 5-0….they never met anyone like him!
India will be the team in 1-2 years but who can forget what Border, Taylor, Waugh and Ponting have done.

G.Sobers
D.Bradman
K.Miller
‘nough said.

BG, I was talking about 2 eras….lates 70s, 80s and early 90s for the Windies world domination team and then early 90s to now for the Aussie team that has dominated. Yes, having those guys in the team would be good, even at 60-80 years of age which they would have been.
January 29th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Oh I get it.
I was kind’ve wondering why you hadn’t included the best of the best (in my opinion).
January 29th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Heh, personally I think it’s a pretty unfair comparison. Ponting is the best player of pace I have ever seen, and Shane Warne would bring in a crazy level of spin unseen by any of the West Indians of back then. Playing pace well would be the same reason why I’d be tempted to put in Hussey instead of Border. Maybe I’m just too overawed with Hussey’s average of 80.

Funny how the off-topic thread about cricket gets the most discussion lately !
I reckon a discussion about rugby league legends of the game is overdue.
BG’s favourite all time player: Ray Price.

Wally Lewis. Greatest ever.

Did Lillie and Thommo play in the early 90’s? I think you are mixing up the Aussie team of the late 70’s/early 80’s to include the Lillie Thommo pairing. However that era didn’t have the success of the 2×16 in a row teams of the late 90’s and the current team.
What you are really comparing is the best of the two countries for the last 30ish years?

Oops, missed some quotes…

Firstly Bradman would struggle in the team (does not like the short stuff and this WI team would exploit that). Secondly Courtney Walsh?
January 31st, 2008 at 6:53 pm
Ah, the opening……I agree that Bradman would struggle a bit against that Windies team and I reckon his average would probably be halved to around 50 for a series against them in the 80s.
Still, not bad for a 70 year old.
February 1st, 2008 at 8:18 am
Even during Bodyline Bradman had an average over 50. I don’t think he’ll have that much trouble with the short stuff!
February 1st, 2008 at 8:49 am
I don’t think you can judge the great man on one bad series. As Matthew said, he averaged 50 odd. Working on that basis, you could say Lara was crap against spin because of one bad series on the sub-continent. Raj, you do know that saying anything bad against the great man Bradman is on par to Australians like bagging someones religion.

DD - I take your point about ‘eras’ etc, but why on earth are you talking about Bradman as a 70 or 80 year old, ?
We are talking about players as they were - in the prime of their careers, within their respective eras, are we not ?
But, in the interests of complete fairness DD, lets follow your argument of applying the ageing process to *all* players for a moment.
I see you’ve listed a D.Lillee, a J.Thomson and an A.Border playing in the same team as current Australian players.
Now Thommo & co are certainly not in their 80s, and were fantastic within their eras, but they’re certainly no spring chickens today, my good friend.
Big Galoot.

BG, okay, re: Lillee and Thommo…midway through my post, my brain swapped and changed between eras and best I had seen in the last 30 years. Oops. Throw Lee in there then and one other. Re: Bradman…sorry mate…it’s based on the old joke. Two guys talking about Bradman (when he was still alive):
“How do you reckon Bradman would go against the bowlers of today?”
“Oh, I reckon he’d probably average about 50 nowadays”
“Wow…that’s half his average….that bad?!”
“Yeah, but he’s 80 years old!”
February 1st, 2008 at 12:01 pm
Ah yes, its eons since I’ve heard that old chestnut. I admit, I didn’t spot the subtle punchline in your post.
As a favour, please be more obvious with your humour, DD. For instance, as a byline you could add something like this -
“**BG - this is a joke - get it, ya big boofhead ?**”
February 1st, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Sorry mate. I’ve had problems with my outsourcers in Upper Botobolar (Somewhere far overseas). I thought I could get away with paying then $5 a week to post entries here that were both informative and humorous but they’ve been throwing back stuff like this - basic mistakes….and another stuff I just can’t use. It’s given me no end of trouble as you and CH have picked up on. From now on, I will go back to posting here myself.

At a lousy five bucks a week, I reckon you got damn good value.
Oh yes, and I forgot to mention - I’ve just joined the US comedy writers’ union.
The picket line is gathering as we speak.

I like the old story about the English player talking about a Test Match vs Australia in the old days. Something along the lines of:
“We took a wicket in the first over…had the Aussies 1-2. Second over, we got another one, Aussies 2-5. Bradman strolls to the crease…………bowler comes in, Bradman hooks…skies it………….CAUGHT!……
Australia 3-458 !”

Not enough time to watch the cricket.
I’m too busy thinking about how organisations can adhere to PCI DSS requirement 6.6 “Ensure that web-facing applications are protected against known attacks” with either source code scanning or Application Firewalls.
And note the use of “Requirement”.. Right now it is “Best Practice” (I’d really love for someone to explain what that actually is) but as of June 30, it becomes mandatory…

Dec, Straight bat…shoulder arms if required to the loose delivery and if the acquiring bank is happy, that’s all that matters.
@Raj, I assume you are Indian…apologies if you are not. As an Ozzie, I love the Indians. They are the only competition we have but gees they whinge lately! And now you bag the man Bradman. Can’t you be happy that the best of all time annointed Sachin as his best that he has seen?

Old Salmon Rushdie copped plenty of problems for what he did. You are lucky the Don did not follow that religon in Oz….you would be in trouble my friend!
Wasn’t Singh once bowled and stood there dumbfounded and swore at the English bowler like, WTF? No too bright….look at the stumps you numb nuts!

I think this is the one you refer to. I got this from a mate in the UK when HS was doing his shit here.
The commentary is funny.
February 3rd, 2008 at 8:36 pm
haaaaaaaaaaaa !!!
Commentary following the dismissal:
“Now, why is Harbijan Singh standing there ? When a bowler bowls and it hits the stumps, you’re out.”

It’s a pity that Gilchrist who is probably the most honest player in world cricket at the moment is retiring.
February 7th, 2008 at 9:19 am
I think it best to switch the talk over to league as BG previously suggested. Cricket is fun to play in the backyard, but I’d rather have someone poke a stick in my eye than watch cricket for any length of time.

Amazing but true…
Suruchi Mohan - orginally of the sub-continent, no slouch with the bat himself, favours rugby league over cricket !
