Is Apple reversing “bad boy” roll with MS?

Gees….the Mac OSX boys are copping a bit of a flogging on the Net now…..It’s like payback time! But is that fair?

It’s no surprise and you didn’t need to be old Nostradamus to predict it was going to happen. (Even I did!). But, the big heroes are now talking up what we all knew was the bleeding obvious! It was just a matter of time. Still, to be fair to Apple (and I use a Mac - 2 in total the office, all else….yeah, variations of Linux as primary machines for the guys and one failed 6 month Vista “experiment” which became Linux), they are not supported by a bunch of vendors helping to support their security! Okay, it’s only a matter of time…I know….but seeing something today on a test machine (Windows)….after many years…..scared me big time. I saw the Norton Antivirus screen!

  1. It’s a laugh that anyone would be a Microsoft defender after all these years but they pop up just at the opportune moments! Rarely would they be seen here on BorB. Their community is network admins and managers that work in MS networks but still are people with passion for what they do but without the real life experience of the real world. You just have to feel sorry for them some of them. (Like the twits that post here about Big 4 world expertise!)

I’m an avid BSD user, Linux fan-boi and reformed macOS addict.

What apple is doing is unforgivable - they are making the same mistakes that everyone else made 10 years ago.

To be honest I have a quiet chuckle everytime I read about this topic. I am old enough to remember mac-heads laughed at the number and frequency of patches, upgrades and security alerts for Windows. One of the main reasons that the Mac-OS was not heavily targeted was that they only had 5% of the market and were not considered a juicy target in some circles.

With the recent move to an Intel platform and increased market share this situation has changed. From my perspective it is a logical strategy to draw upon Microsoft’s experience in this area. Hopefully they will not repeat too many of their mistakes.

  4. Quite frankly though Brian, Windows security sucked until Vista. This isn’t so much about Apple gaining market share or gaining more recognition, it’s just that Apple haven’t moved forward at all in terms of security in about ten years.

Microsoft, on the other hand, have responded to bad publicity and have actually gained leaps and bounds. They are now onto a multi user platform and have implemented a ton of security into Vista. Their server platforms actually have a good security record now.

Totally agree with you Antaxd. I think the great danger here for Microsoft (and a handy lesson for Apple) is complacency. Once you start to believe you are safe from attack that is when you are the most vulnerable.

I will stick my neck out and predict that within the next 18 months there will be at least 2 major breaches in the Vista platform. Why because there are very talented people out there that see a secure system as a challenge.
